Nancy Pelosi has been constantly elected since 1987 at the Congress. But this midterms could be the end of the story for this democratic icon. She is under fire from Donald Trump and even from her party…
“As long as Trump is here, I’m here,” told House minority leader’s, Nancy Pelosi to CNN last month. She is running for the seventeenth time for the House of Representative. Nancy Pelosi is an icon for the Democratic party, she was the first woman to serve as Speaker of the US House of Representatives during four years, from 2007 to 2011. And after this midterms election, Pelosi could sit again as Speaker if the Democrats win.
She was elected for the first time in 1987, and election after election kept her district in California. Pelosi was one of the major supporters of ObamaCare in 2010. Irony of history this reform cost her her sit. In November 2010, the Republicans won the midterms, and she lost the presidency of the US House of Representative for the benefit of a Republican. Since then, she continues to be a tough opponent in the Congress to Donald Trump. But some of the outstanding members of the Democratic party want Pelosi out of the House. They consider that she is “too centrist” and doesn’t represent the Democrats anymore. They want a new generation of Democrats in the Congress. At least 86 Democratic candidates choose to not support Pelosi’s campaign. According to them, she could be an obstacle to take the House of Representatives back.
Besides that, Nancy Pelosi is one of the favorite targets of Trump on Twitter. “Democrats, please do not distance yourselves from Nancy Pelosi. She is a wonderful person whose ideas & policies may be bad, but who should definitely be given a 4th chance,” Trump ironically tweeted about Pelosi.
As an icon for the Democrats she could also be their weakness, and Trump undertsood it. She appears in many Republican adverstising as a symbol of the “failing Democratic party”. The Republicans candidates use the same political tactic as Trump with Clinton in 2016. But, Pelosi has not said yet her last word.
“I think I’m the most qualified person for this job,” said Pelosi, about sitting as President of the House. She already faced many campaigns against her, particularly when she opposed to the war in Irak. To the new generation in the Democratic party she said : “Just win!”.
For many political observers, taking Pelosi down could open a new era in the Congress and bring out new talents in the Democratic party. Furthermore, Pelosi won easily all the elections for the past 30 years with more than 80%. A performance that would make President Trump envious…
